It’s Christmas time again and everyone around me is in full shopping mode. At least the holiday season here in England doesn’t start as early as that in the Philippines where we normally hear Christmas songs played on air during the “ber” months: September, October and so on.
Now, why do I say a traditional English Christmas with a Pinay twist? It is because at this time of the year I’d be twisting my hands with worry about what to buy my friends and family for Christmas.
I think this year will be different than before because of the credit crunch. A lot of people have lost their jobs here and big shops like Woolworths and MFI have gone bust. When we went out last weekend and passed by an MFI shop, I felt sorry for the employees who are losing their jobs especially at this time of the year. On the other hand seeing people rushing into the shop looking for items at rock bottom prices or coming out of the shop carrying pieces of furniture, to me they looked like vultures… picking on a dead creature’s flesh. I can’t blame them though because everyone is trying to get their money’s worth. We are all looking for the best bargains to stretch our hard earned money and fill our cupboards or get our loved ones some presents for Christmas.
This year, I decided to give a Christmas hamper for each family and no individual presents. And to save more money, I plan to assemble the hampers myself instead of buying them from the shops. I found out that you can save more money and you get to tailor each hamper according to your friends’ taste or preferences. In this way, they receive a more personalised gift rather than the generic ones you get in the shops.
We haven’t put up our Christmas tree yet, we normally put them up on the first weekend of December. We do recycle our fake Christmas tree every year, we don’t buy real trees. It’s a matter of personal choice. To me it’s such a waste cutting down a tree and put them in your house for only a few weeks. And for a change the fresh wreath I normally hang on our front door will have some fresh edible fruits in it like apples, figs, pears and walnuts. I don’t mind the birds and the bees feeding on it, as long as the neighbours don’t start munching on my apples! I am making a stand on recycling… but don’t worry I have not become a member of the knit-your-own-sandals brigade yet.
Ah now, we come to the English traditions or customs during Christmas. Did you know that when somebody hands you a gift, you are expected to open it in front of the giver? I am now getting used to this but I still have to practice my “delighted” face when I open a present that sometimes is not to my liking and say, “Oh, how lovely!”. At least in the Philippines we tend to set aside the present, make chika chika first and open it in private. So when you open it and you don’t like your gift, you store it in your closet and recycle it for next year and give it to somebody else, lol!
Here, our Christmas day starts early, opening our presents. Then we go to church and drive off to see the in-laws for Christmas lunch or dinner. We have the usual turkey complete with trimmings, Christmas pudding (but both my hubby and son don’t like it, so I usually bring my own chocolate cake as additional dessert kuno for the host but it really is a back-up, that way my boys are happy too, hehe!). The table is not complete without the Christmas crackers on top of each plate.
It is a rolled up hollow cardboard wrapped in shiny paper, shaped like a big candy and you ask the person sitting next to you to hold the other end and you both pull it at the same time in opposite directions. It comes apart with a bang, and the person who gets the bigger half of the cracker, gets the goodies inside i.e. a small stainless steel photo frame or a pair of nail clippers or a comb, a toy or a novelty pen. It’s quite nice especially if the host bought the good quality Christmas crackers and not the cheap type lest you end up with a plastic comb, plastic photo frame… hey, they’re all still the same items anyway, lol!. The cracker also includes a party hat, and a small piece of paper with a joke or riddle written on it one is supposed to read out loud. Sometimes you get a lot of laughs if it’s funny, most of the time you hear, “Oh yeah, heard that one before, har har har.” And everybody wears the party hats whilst eating their dinner, all looking rather silly but during this time all of us would have had more than a few drinks so it doesn’t matter really. The only sober ones on the dinner table would be the young ones, looking at the grown ups with their silly hats!
The New Year’s Eve party is the one we usually spend with friends either in a private party or if you want to splash out, have a gala evening at a social do. This event we normally have more booze than food. It is not a sit down dinner. Unlike in the Philippines, we don’t sound like we are in the war zone during New Year’s eve. We do have fireworks and set them off at the strike of midnight but compared to the Philippines, it’s more sedate and only lasts for half an hour.
These last two years I have hosted the New Year’s Eve party at my house with friends. This year, my friend says it’s her turn to host it so I am looking forward to welcoming the New Year with no dishes to wash and mess to tidy up on the first day of 2009. I think I got to find that polka dot shirt I stored somewhere in my wardrobe. And I am sure my fellow Pinay friend who’s going to host the party will have lots of round shaped fruits on her table at New Year’s Eve.

Thanks for the alert Maan, I saw it na and glad the article was worth featuring in the Inquirer section, lol! I am just busy preparing for the New Year's eve party tonight. Potluck daw so I gotta cook the pancit and my crema de fruta is already done.
Will take photos if I am not too drunk to forget, lol! Hubby gave me a new digicam as a pressie this Christmas so will put it to good use tonight! Then I can post them here at PF. A Pinoy-British New Year's eve party.
Inday!
Inday...I say "inday" or " day" a lot. I was strongly influeced by my former boss in the bank. She calls all women "Inday" and since we spent a lot of time together at work ( during budget season, we go home at 3 am), nahawa niya ako, 'day!!
I remember Paris as the only place where I spent the longest time looking for the Metro station... 30 minuti. Most people I approached don't speak English (dahil ba nasa France ako?...duh...hahaha) and are not friendly. Before ako mahimatay sa hilo, there came this lady who I called an "angel" because she spoke English and she led me to the station. It was located somewhere you had to go down. And Paris is the only place I didn't wear rubber shoes...2.5 inch heels and a stylish top... feeling French 'day!). Napaka-user friendly naman yung Metro...if you find it...hahaha!
Hope to come back...I miss the crepe! 'Day, I have a Baldemor...love his vibrant colors!
Maan, pwede bang mag EB sa Tahiti? mwahahahaa

I am only using Inday sayong, to get the attention of fellow pinays all over d world kc naman pinay di ba so pinay ang dating lafs. But i am fondly called Rose! Yes Paul gauguin spent his last days painting there in the Marquises Island which is 5 hrs by plane fr Tahiti, Famous Bora-Bora is one hr by plane fr Tahiti .Wonderful works of Art By Gauguin ?? ewan ko lang bakit ang mahal mahal at naging famous siya ?Kidding sigoro dahil sa kalayuan ng tahiti. Kaya one of the most sought after of arts !!i prefer works of our own Baldemor of Paete...

Tahiti and St Gauden
Bonjour Inday or is it rose? :) Not only France but Tahiti as well :) That must be a lovely island!
I really wanted to visit Lourdes this year being a jubilee year but times are hard. Its good to hear St Gaudens is near that place. iseem to have passed a sign with that city name in past trips. It must be lovely being at the pyrenees but surely cold :)
I love to visit lesser known places - much preferred than big cities
The perfect christmas cracker would be the one w/ kakanin in it!
Good to see you here Rose. Yes, I definitely miss the bibingka and puto esp. at Christmas. You know what, the ideal christmas crackers for us pinays living abroad would be those with puto bumbong, or bibingka or ensaymada inside it instead of the usual goodies, lol!
Inside my ideal Christmas cracker...
...would be 4 roundtrip first class tickets to Manila next year for summer! :-)
Hey Girls......I am starting
Hey Girls......I am starting collecting christmas crackers .... better buy early its cheap a set of 6 pcs only £25.99, 'n other set is £18.99......kids cant wait lol ...so i hide it........
Posh pressie on Crackers?
I have not seen a crackers with a decent pressie inside them even the most expensive one. Mostly just a little toys and such unless you make a giant crackers and put yourself inside it and ask hubby to pull it.
Herra, how many crackers do you need in your table honey, you must have a mansion in Wales or Castles. Hope you get your money worth tho. Crackers are only meant for decorative purposes.
self-made cracker?
Corrine! What a fun idea! LOL
Kaya lang if you stay in there for quite a while, baka there might be a different putok. Now talk about indescent!
Kids the winner, corine;
Kids the winner, corine; today i just give 1 set each of my kids to bring their party in school, and i have only left here one but i need to collect more......i think you only see £1.99 price over in manchester lol.....visit Marks n' Spencer and Next you can see decent wrap crackers cost of 30 quid set wc decent inside..........
Manchester NOT cheap at all
Herra, I have just bought a crackers today worth 12 punds for 12 and no they are not the cheapest one. Infact, they have a good pressie stuffed inside and not plastic at all.
You wont get much for £1:99anywhere mind you and certainly not in Manchester. I think the idea of it is more expensive or cheaper up North is a myth since M&S price or Lewis or Harvey''s or Seldfridges are the same anywhere in the country.
I have just done my shopping in M&S yesterday and crackers are still just crackers with different goodies. 6 crackers for 14 quids are ok but cannot see much of the difference apart from plastic and not so plastic.
Define decent...
Kasi now I'm curious. Ano ang indecent na cracker??
Herme, pls post some ...
Please post some pic of crackers with decent pressie.... I'm really curious kc hindi pa ako nakakakita nun :) .

Photo of christmas crackers with indecent price tag, lol
Dredd, I got a photo of a very expensive cracker in my album... one you can get from Asprey!
That's indecent..lol
Anna, as I was looking at the pic I couldn't help but to raise my eyebrow....hahhahahha indecent price tag, indeed!
the crackers and the culture and bibingka plus puto bumbong
Gosh I had to re read the comment thread kasi di mo ma gets and crackers! Food pala :) I thought parang fire cracker LOL
How interesting to blend cultures. Us here all I think of is the bibingka and puto bumbong.
As a matter of fact when I had a meeting yesterday afternoon at Dusit Thani hotel, I ordered both pero shared naman. Gosh its so bawal for me pero I really need to taste them once again and super sarap! Bibingka with itlog na pula yummy! And the puto bumbong was so chewy sarap!
Crackling price and a tasty bibingka!
Hey girls forget about the pricey crackers!Let's get some cheap puto and bibingka and drink salabat! (my secret for having a nice hair and complexion) pardon me for blowing my own trumpet since we are talking paputok here!.
Herme, darling, why no try to make your own crackers and put your chosen pressie inside and at least, you don't waste your dosh with those posh crackers minus the posh pricetag. I know how you meant you get more for what you paid, but in general crackers are for decorative purposes and part of the dining fun. I know kids love the goodies inside and the idea of pulling the crackers is fun for everyone!.
Mind you,I just pull them for the sake of the sounds and my nieces face expressions when pulling them are priceless.
Christmas crackers may paputok, not food!
Hi Maan, it definitely is not food but you are half korek, kasi there's a tiny paputok inside the cracker that's why when you pull it apart it gives out a loud pop!
I have uploaded an image in my album with the contents shown inside it but don't know how to add it here in my comment, I am not techno savvy here at PF, lol!
Mind you, this one is the most expensive cracker I've seen yet and for grown ups. Us lesser mortals are content with the ordinary pressies.
Not cheap at £25.99 !
Hermi, those christmas crackers at £25.99 are not cheap unless you are the posh type, lol! What are the goodies inside?
others buying 35 quid and
others buying 35 quid and mine is only 26 quid so i guess mine is cheaper theam them but this is not for the kids......hope i can open it now but it says jewelry with whisper ...... ngeh-awww.....
Similar tradition
Anna, we have similar Christmas tradition here in Canada. I guess it is because Canada is a Commonwealth of England and most of the original migrants are from England.
We always have those crackers, too, when we used to have the whole clan for Christmas dinner at my mother-in-law. They usually end up giving the surprise toys to my daughter since she is the youngest of the grandchildren. So, my daughter has accumulated so many little toys and knick-knacks through the years (she's a rat pack and doesn't want to part with them). Thank goodness we've stopped having Christmas crackers. My daughter doesn't really miss them and besides, I find them waste of money. That's why I never had them when the Christmas dinner is at our place (bah-humbug).
Yes, they, too, like opening the presents in front of the giver. That's why at birthday parties, they always set a time for opening presents. That was a bit tricky when my kid was young. You know how innocent kids can be and they just show their true emotions...whether they like the present or not.
Ang lupit mo naman, no crackers. lol!
What? No crackers in your house at Christmas ?
And yes, that opening of the presents I sometimes dread esp. when a child opens it... a bit like watching someone from the bomb squad diffusing a bomb, lol!
Crackers
Lella, crackers are part of the celebration and the Christmas dinner is not complete without them. In fact,I have them on my table even on New Years eve to celebrate. Kids and adult love the silly jokes and the sometimes little pressie you get from it.
Christmas cracker
Hey
Anna, at first I thought you meant cracker na biskwit. This is the
first time I've heard of this. Post a picture naman of the before and
after, I'm really curious. Even after Christmas na, I can wait. Although I remember playing with something
like this when I was young. Kaya lang it was tiny with no gift inside.
Cracking up on crackers at Christmas
Hi Lella, sure will post some photos when I get them. I haven't bought mine yet. Last year I was lucky because I bought a raffle ticket from a charity shop and won a box of really nice Christmas crackers that it cracked me up, lol!
Colourful wreath
That is a nice wreath you made Anna. Don't go crackling at Christmas day. I am looking forward to Crimbo actually. Tho, I am on duty all holidays the family work around me so, we will be having Christmas dinner as usual when I get back from my morning shift..
Should've skipped on the holly leaves
Corrine, I should have asked the florist to miss out on the holly leaves, it's so prickly and difficult to put my fruits on it.
That's one thing when one works for the health care industry esp. hospitals, it's got to be staffed 24/7, no holiday breaks. Somebody always has to work those shifts, don't they?
Holy nights
Deffinitely, not to skip the holy! But, where will I find time to do the kissing, I try not to walk under the holy when I can unless, the guy is a looker mind you.
Sadly, I will be at work Christmas and I guess, it won't be me having stomach the cramps and over consumed of substance but somebody else. I am also on duty New Years eve day. But, luckily I am off between Christmas and New Year so,I can meet up with friends from York and Newcastle. I am just looking forward to my annual leave in February and sunny PH.
Bon Voyage
Wow...sarap naman ng February mo while we are freezing here ..... super sunbathing naman ang beauty mo .... don't forget to take a lot of photos and have fun.
You mean mistletoe?
Corrine, I think it's the mistletoe. You hang it on a doorway and you get to kiss the person who pass underneath. If you really like to kiss somebody then just carry your mistletoe and dangle it above their heads and voila you got an excuse, lol!
Crimbo
I learn something new everyday at PF, Corina. Now what's Crimbo?
PASKO
Crimbo is Christmas Lella. I do apologised for using slang word. Even me I dont know what jamming means?
